HAPPY NATIONAL MOJITO DAY!

That’s right, this week on Bar Side Jive I am bringing an easy (and delicious) twist to this Cuban classic.

The Mojito is rumored to have started when sailors arrived with Sir Francis Drake in the 1500’s on the shores of Cuba by ship but were all sick with Scurvy. They searched out the “burning water” in hopes to cure their illness. This “burning water” was really the rum made with the shores sugar cane and mixed with tropical herbs of the island. Lime juice itself is a cure for Scurvy and thus the “burning water” cured the sailors. The life saving concoction became known as the Mojito.

Your classic Mojito is made of white rum, sugar, fresh mint, lime juice and soda water.

What have I been preaching on the show? Take a classic and make it your own. So that is exactly what we did for National Mojito Day. Say hello to a coconut blueberry mojito!

Coconut Blueberry Mojito

Coconut Blueberry Mojito

2 oz White Rum
1 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Coconut Syrup
Soda Water
Fresh Blueberries
Fresh Mint

Directions:
In glass, mix lime juice and coconut syrup. Muddle fresh blueberries and mint in mixture. Strain mixture into glass with ice. Add Rum. Top with soda water. Garnish with fresh blueberries and mint sprig.

What I love about this version of the Mojito is its light, refreshing, and full of fresh ingredients and flavor. And if you do what I do, and use this Sugar Free Coconut Syrup by Toriani, it’s a low calorie mojito.

You can check out the show HERE where DC and I talk mojitos, scurvy, and how freaking hot it is in Texas. I also have a really great story about a hamster in a bar this week. Plus we have great new music from Ronda Ray.

Make sure to check us out EVERY FREAKING THURSDAY at 7:30PM CST HERE where you can Watch or Listen.

Don’t forget to follow me on the gram at @itsthetipsygypsy we have some exciting news coming up!
