Happy 4th of July everybody! We are coming at you with a special Independence Day edition of The Tipsy Gypsy on this week’s episode of Bar Side Jive! That’s right, on tonight’s show I am bringing you the perfect throwback cocktail to everyone’s childhood – the Bomb Pop!

Remember the days of being a kid on 4th of July? You can’t wait until the sun goes down so that it’s dark enough to see those sparks fly in the air. It’s hot out and you and your neighborhood friends are playing with the hose while your dad grills burgers and brats on the grill. You could use something cold to cool you off when you hear the greatest sound of them all – the ice cream man in his truck blaring the sounds of sweets. You scrounge up some change and then race him down the block and order the infamous red, white and blue bomb pop!

Now that you’re an adult, of course the original popsicle is always a treat. But what if I said you can have an adult boozy version of this beloved treat? For the last 3 years Smirnoff has seasonally launched a flavor called Red, White & Berry that you can typically find on shelves right before Memorial Day and through Labor Day. The bottle itself is red, white, and blue and looks just like the beloved Bomb Pop.

I am bringing you two versions of this – one is super boozy, and one is just, well, boozy.

Bomb Pop Cocktail

Bomb Pop (Boozy, Lower ABV)

1.5 oz Smirnoff Red, White & Berry Vodka
.25 oz Grenadine
.25 oz Blue Curacao
4-5 oz Lemonade
1 Bomb Pop Popsicle

Bomb Pop (Super Boozy, Higher ABV)

1.5 oz Smirnoff Red, White & Berry Vodka
.25 oz Grenadine
.25 oz Blue Curacao
4-5 oz Smirnoff Ice Original
1 Bomb Pop Popsicle

Place grenadine in bottom of glass, fill with ice, pour in vodka, lemonade or Smirnoff Ice, top with blue curacao. Garnish with popsicle.

Smirnoff Red, White & Berry has a smaller ABV than your regular flavored vodkas, so don’t be alarmed with pairing it with a malt beverage.

This is definitely on the sweeter side of things, so I wouldn’t rely on this drink as your all-day go to cocktail. But it does make a fun adult dessert cocktail or signature cocktail to welcome guests to your cook out.

JUST THE TIP

This week’s Just The Tip is extremely important especially when it comes to holiday weekends in the bars. Your word to the drinking wise is DO NOT and let me repeat that again, DO NOT yell, whistle, wave your hands, tap your glasses on the bar top, be obnoxious to try and get the bartenders attention. I promise you they see you, and they are working their way systematically down the bar line and will get to you. I can guarantee you if you want to be dead last in getting your drinks, then by all means piss off your bartender and do these things. Patience is key this weekend.

After my segment tonight make sure to stick around and check out original music artists Cinema For The Blind. Two members of the band stop by and they are only 18 and 15 and YOU HAVE TO HEAR THEM!

This week’s show we had a couple technical difficulties in the studio so we went old school and broadcasted on Facebook. You can catch this episode HERE.

As always, you can catch me and my wonderful host DC for Bar Side Jive every Thursday night at 7:30PM CST.
