Bre with friend and original music artist Rachel Stacy.

What a crazy week it has been! The first episode of The Tipsy Gypsy aired and I couldn’t thank everyone enough that tuned in and reached out to me about my first on-air appearance. This week was just as fun in studio – if not more. We enjoyed great cocktails and I got a special surprise that this weeks original artist was actually a long-time friend, Rachel Stacy.

Here’s the break down of this weeks show

STIRRING SHIT UP

Jalapeno Pineapple Summer Smash

I wanted to continue my summer cocktail series by bringing you one of my favorite summer bourbon cocktails. A lot of the time brown spirits get pushed to the side during the hot months, so I wanted to bring you a super simple cocktail that not only caters to those who love brown liquor, but is something refreshing, spicy, and sweet.

The perfect cocktail to hit those senses is my Jalapeño Pineapple Summer Smash. The full body of the bourbon, paired with the sweetness of the pineapple and the kick of the jalapeño, is for sure to be a crowd pleaser.  The jalapeño kick sneaks up in the tail of the sip of the cocktail, but is also enhanced by your olfactory senses when you get a whiff of the fresh jalapeño garnish.

The perfect summer cocktail for bourbon lovers.

Jalapeno Pineapple Summer Smash
Ingredients:

1 oz Simple Syrup

4 oz Pineapple Juice

2 oz Bourbon

Fresh jalapeno slices

Combine 2-5 fresh jalapeno slices (depending on how spicy you like things) in a glass or shaker tin with the simple syrup. Muddle together. Strain out seeds and jalapeno skins.

In fresh glass with ice, add jalapeno syrup, bourbon, and pineapple juice. Garnish cocktail with fresh jalapeno.

Can’t tolerate brown spirits in general? Simply switch out the bourbon for vodka or white rum.

JUST THE TIP

DC Enjoying the Summer Smash & My Bar Tip

This week’s bar tip is about the tip line. No, I’m not telling you how much to pay, I am telling you what you can’t pay with, and that is a phone number.

Although this typically happens to more female bartenders than males, I’ve seen this happen with both genders.

Giving a bartender your phone number, but no actual tip is a huge no-no. No one can pay their bills on phone numbers or jotted down compliments. You more than likely aren’t the first to leave your number, they are really only nice to you because they want your money, and therefore more than likely don’t have a shot with them anyway. So if you really want to win over your bartender’s heart, make sure to leave a hefty tip with your number.

LIFE BEHIND BARS

My bar story this week is one of me being “off” on Mother’s Day and taking my mom to get a cocktail in a dry county in East Texas. After being ran off the patio by a group of kids at the local Applebee’s, we went to small town bar that had recently just opened. It was like being in a movie. You had one bored bartender entertaining the local flirt shooting his shot at the only two other women in the bar, a couple trying to win a prize out of a claw machine by the door, a real life cat walking across the bar, and an owner trying to get an ice machine out of the kitchen by trying to move it through a door that is too small.

Since this was our only option, my mom and I shut this bar down. Then again, their last call was at 10:30 PM. One of the female bar patrons, who made it known time and time again that the bar’s Facebook said 50% off drinks for moms, asked the bartender to give her an extra shot for her friend who was coming in real quick just for a drink. The friend showed up, newborn baby in hand, ready to pound some drinks in a few minutes.

You remember that scene in Reese Witherspoon’s “Sweet Home Alabama” where she says “You have a baby…in a bar.” Well, I lived out that scene. As she is pounding shots of Jaegermeister, the bar owner looks at her and says, “I know we said 50% off drinks for moms. All you had to do was say you’re a mom, you didn’t have to bring the baby with you.”

So folks, moral of the story is you can just go to East Texas to get your drink on and make it a kid friendly event.
